Dr. Shabana Usman Simjee is a Professor of Pharmacology at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi. Her typical workday revolves around her duties as a principal investigator and research mentor at the institute. She has received B. Sc (Hons) and M. Sc. degree in from University of Karachi, Pakistan, MS from Florida International University, Miami, USA, and PhD in Neuroscience from The University of Manchester, UK. From year 2004 till date Simjee is working at ICCBS. Her current research focus is in the area of chronic pain and neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, stroke, and CNS tumors. For this purpose, her research team
makes use of both in vivo and in vitro models. She also shares International US Patents with her collaborators. Dr. Simjee has published several international papers in peer reviewed journals. She is also an editorial board member of 3 international peer reviewed journals. In year 2004-2005, Dr. Simjee was a visiting scholar at St. Michael’s Hospital, and The Hospital for the Sick Children Research Institute, Canada. Under Higher Education Link Programme Scheme between HEC (Pakistan) and British Council, she was also sent to University of Reading, UK as a British Council Visitor in year 2009. Dr. Simjee has been awarded several Travel Awards from esteemed organization to facilitate her attendance and presentation at international conferences. To date, 23 students have been awarded PhD degree and 14 students received M. Phil degree under her supervision, whereas, 2 PhD and 5 MPhil students were co-supervised by her.
