1967

Establishment and Early Development:

The nucleus of the Postgraduate Institute of Chemistry is established in the Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi under the leadership of Prof. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui
1964 - 1965:

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman's Contribution

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman joins the Department of Chemistry as a Lecturer and later pursues his PhD at Cambridge University on a Commonwealth Scholarship.
1967 - 1990:

Leadership Transition:

Prof. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui serves as Director of the institute from 1967 to 1990, overseeing its early growth and development.
1968 - 1973:

International Collaboration:

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman returns from Cambridge University and contributes significantly to the institute’s development, establishing collaborations with international institutions.
1973:

Co-Director Appointment:

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman becomes Co-Director of the institute, marking a pivotal moment in its history.
1974:

Acquisition of Advanced Equipment:

Grants secured by Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman enable the acquisition of Pakistan’s first NMR and mass spectrometers, enhancing the institute’s research capabilities.
2005:

Structural Evolution

Ms. Nadira Panjwani’s grant leads to the construction of the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, integrating the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry into the larger International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences.
2000 - 2008:

Leadership Expansion

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman serves as Federal Minister of Science and Technology and Founding Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, catalyzing significant investment and development in Pakistan’s science and education sectors.
2008 - 2023:

Continued Leadership

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary assumes the role of Director, guiding the institute through a period of continued growth and recognition.
Ongoing

Excellence and Recognition

The institute continues to excel, garnering international recognition as a WHO Center of Excellence for Pesticide Analysis, a UNESCO Center of Excellence, and through affiliations with TWAS and COMSATS.
